US computer firm IBM plans to lay off 5,000 workers in its service area in the US, and outsource the majority of them to India, the US business daily Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing an insider.

At year’s end IBM employed around 400,000 people worldwide, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that the company had laid off around 4,600 workers in areas of software, sales and semiconductors at the start of the 2009.

The job slashes come amid further efforts by IBM to cut costs in a company which otherwise has so far managed to buck the economic crisis and shows strong profits. At the end of 2008 the company reported an unexpected rise in earnings and for 2009 it projected record results.

As your company keeps growing, you will soon realize that you need to hire extra resources, if you want your organization to grow to greater heights. Getting in extra resources to help you can bring in increased profits and a higher ROI. But you have to consider the hidden costs that you have to bear with hiring more resources.

You will have to shell out a large sum of money for infrastructure, technology and training. Apart from the cost, you will also have to spend a lot of time and energy on finding suitable resources and train them on the job. Even after the recruitment process is over, you may still have to face a few management headaches.

If you are on the verge of recruiting new resources, why not consider the option of outsourcing? Outsourcing can help you cut down your operating costs by half and also help you utilize your precious time and energy for building up your business instead of spending it on mentoring new recruits.

Here are few guidelines to help you with outsourcing:
1. Make a list of your core and non-core functions. Based on this list, you can decide which processes of your company can easily be outsourced. By outsourcing non-core processes, you can channel your time, effort and money into building your core functions.
2. Once you made up your mind on the process that you wish to outsource, plan your budget and ask yourself what you actually expect the outcome of these business processes to be.
3. Based on the outcome that you expect from the project that you are going to outsource, you can decide on the skill sets that you want to see in your outsourcing partner. Accordingly, you can search for an outsourcing partner, who matches your expectations.
4. Search for an outsourcing partner who has expertise in the project you want to outsource. Also, check the level of security and confidentiality that your outsourcing partner offers. Ask your outsourcing vendor for references. Check with these references if the vendor’s work is satisfactory. You can also ask your vendor, to provide you with free trial.
5. Make sure you sign a non-disclosure agreement at the start of the project. Also ensure that any agreement decided between you and your vendor is put down on paper, to avoid confusions at a later stage.

5 Ways to Cut Costs with Technology

Now more than ever, the first thing on every business owner’s mind is saving money. Perhaps one of the most effective ways to do so is through the use of technology. While there are a number of ways in which technology can reduce costs for business, these five solutions are straightforward to implement and produce results quickly.

1. Outsource Information Technology Needs
Right now, businesses are struggling to do more with less. By outsourcing technology needs such as IT Support, Website Hosting, and Computer Networking, any business can get the benefits of having a full-time IT staff at a fraction of the cost. In addition to saving money, outsourcing technology needs saves valuable time, giving business owners and employees alike the freedom to focus on profitable daily operations.

2. Evaluate Current Software
Businesses that haven’t taken the time to evaluate their software may very well be missing valuable opportunities to streamline certain processes. By assessing the effectiveness of current technologies and identifying areas in which productivity can be improved, businesses can significantly increase their overall effectiveness. In fact, the right customized software solution can remove 20-50% of a company’s excess labor. Any way you look at it, decreased labor means decreased costs for businesses.

3. Conduct a Website Audit
The virtual storefront of a business, a website has the potential to attract qualified customers and as a result, boost revenue. However, issues with design, usability, and functionality can hinder a website’s ability to convert site traffic into customers. A website audit conducted by a qualified professional can help businesses identify ways to increase revenue, transforming an unprofitable site into a lucrative resource.

4. Monitor Computer Systems
When technology fails, businesses lose money in the form of lost productivity, lost sales, and costly repairs. By having their computer systems monitored round-the-clock, businesses can identify and resolve technology issues before they result in unnecessary maintenance costs and lost revenue. Investing in a monitoring service now can help to save any business from incurring the high costs of a future technology failure.

5. Integrate Business Systems
In the current economic climate, no business can afford to waste time or manpower. When employees spend time entering the same data into separate software applications, productivity can suffer. Integration with multiple business systems can cut costs by reducing the need for redundant data entry and making necessary information readily available.
